| Cubagua Island |
| Location: 28 miles southeast of Porlamar. Cubagua was the site of first European settlement in South America in 1493, the fishing town of Nueva Cadiz beads. The city was finally destroyed by a giant wave and abandoned in 1541. Today the barren island is home to only a few itinerant fishing camps. Charagato Bay on the north side of the island is a great place to dive, figuratively and literally. |
